Submission deadline for the pre-registrations of community sound broadcasting services extended

Pretoria – The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA/the Authority) has resolved to extend the submission deadline for pre-registrations in respect of applications for Class Community Sound Broadcasting Service and Radio Frequency Spectrum Licences for purposes of providing community sound broadcasting services from 30 April 2020 to 30 June 2020.

The extension follows requests from stakeholders for ICASA to consider reviewing the submission deadline in light of the national lockdown.

The Authority is also mindful of the fact that the 2019 Community Broadcasting Services Regulations have introduced new requirements and that most registrants may be engaging with these Regulations for the first time. The lockdown has therefore made it difficult for prospective registrants to collate all the requisite information from their respective communities to comply with the requirements by the set deadline of 30 June 2020.

ICASA believes that this extension will allow potential registrants sufficient time to put together their applications and produce all the requisite documentation for this first phase of the licensing process.

“We are mindful of the constraints brought by COVID-19 and related lockdown restrictions on the potential applicants. As such, we would like to urge all interested community-based organizations to take advantage of this opening as the Authority will not be in a position to grant any further extensions in this regard”, concludes ICASA Acting Chairperson, Dr Keabetswe Modimoeng.
